Our most frequently asked question is:
How do you pronounce DEITEL? :-)
The answer is "Die-tell"
I have the "How to Program" book. Do I need the corresponding "for Programmers" book?
I have the "for Programmers" book. Do I need the corresponding "How to Program" book?
If you have a book from our "How to Program" Series, you do not need the corresponding "for Programmers" book, which is a subset of the "How to Program" book, but is geared to people who are moving from one programming language to another. Similarly, if you have a "for Programmers" book, you don't need the corresponding "How to Program" book. Also the "for Programmer" books DO NOT include summaries, terminology lists and exercises. INSTRUCTORS: The "for Programmers" books DO NOT include instructor ancillary materials--these are available ONLY for the corresponding "How to Program" book".
Why do you use bugs on your book covers?
You've probably noticed that each of our books has hundreds of tips of various kinds which are called out in the text. These used to be pure text in our early editions. A reader mentioned that it would helpful to place icons next to each tip to distinguish them by tip type (Good Programming Practice, Common Programming Error, etc.). The artist who was working on the icons called me for some ideas. For the "Testing and Debugging Tips" (now called "Error-Prevention Tips") I suggested using the "no smoking" symbol (circle with an angled line through it) with a charming bugs peeking out from behind it. The idea was: "No Bugs!" As soon as we saw the bug the artist drew everyone at Deitel wanted to make it our corporate mascot. We think it's a sign of humility to have a bug as the mascot of a programming languages training company. We've actually trademarked the bug with the United States Patent Office.
