Instructor
Paul J. Deitel, CEO and CTO of Deitel & Associates, is a graduate of MIT where he studied Information Technology. Overview
This 5-day, lecture-and-lab course presents object-oriented programming with the Java™ programming language. Key topics include the Java Development Kit (JDK), Java SE 6, classes, objects, encapsulation, interfaces, inheritance, polymorphism, abstract classes, packages, event-driven programming, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), exception handling, file processing, multithreading, generics and generic collections. Students create Java applications, understand Java object-oriented programming, learn to use various Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and participate in laboratory assignments for hands-on experience.

Prerequisites
- Some object-oriented programming experience in a language such as C++, C# or Visual Basic .NET.
- Students without previous object-oriented programming experience may enroll in the course. Deitel will provide reading and lab assignments to be completed prior to the start of the course.

Lab Computers
Students are responsible for bringing their own notebook computer for use in the lab portion of the course. The student must have Java SE 6 Update 11+ and NetBeans installed prior to the start of the course. Students may also download and install Eclipse (optional).
