Spring 2003 Publication Spotlight: Simply Java™ Programming

Simply Java™ Programming An APPLICATION DRIVEN ™ Tutorial Approach takes  a different approach to teaching Java from the ground up. This book combines the DEITEL™ signature LIVE-CODE™ Approach with a new APPLICATION-DRIVEN™ methodology, in which readers build real-world applications that incorporate Java programming fundamentals. Using a step-by-step tutorial approach, readers begin learning the basics of programming and each successive tutorial builds on the readers’ previously learned concepts while introducing new programming features. Learn GUI design, swing components, methods, classes, objects, data types, control statements, arrays, object-oriented programming, string processing, sequential files, interfaces, inheritance, polymorphism and more in this comprehensive introduction to Java. We also include higher-end topics such as database programming, multimedia and speech synthesis, graphics and Web applications development.

Spring 2003 Publication Spotlight: Java™ Software Design

This new objects-first approach to Java programming focuses on program-design and software engineering principles. The book offers three tracks:

Track 1: Java fundamentals
Track 2: Graphics and GUI (includes track 1)
Track 3: Graphics and GUI OOD/UML case study (includes tracks 1 and 2)

Chapters consist of a Java fundamentals component, a graphics and GUI component and an
OOD/UML case study component. The Java fundamentals component presents Java programming concepts using non-graphical, non-GUI applications. Next, graphics and GUI concepts are presented (optionally) in applets and applications that use the Java concepts presented earlier in the chapter. Each chapter ends with a portion of our optional OOD/UML case study. This case study provides readers with an end-to-end design and implementation experience—resulting in a complete drawing application that uses the techniques presented throughout the text.

How to Program Series

New Editions of the World's Best-selling Java and C++ Textbooks

Java How to Program, 5th Edition

Available now!

(Published December 2002)

The world's best-selling Java book is now even better! Designed for beginning through intermediate courses, Java How to Program, Fifth Edition includes many new updates and features:

  • Tuned treatment of object-oriented programming—We performed a high-precision upgrade of Java How to Program, 4/e, Chapter 9 and split it into two chapters. The improvements make the material clearer and more accessible to students and professionals, especially those studying object-oriented programming for the first time.

  • Database and Web applications development with JDBC, Servlets and JSP—By popular demand, we have returned several topics to Java How to Program, 5/e, including Java Database Connectivity with JDBC, servlets and JavaServer Pages™ (JSP).

  • Java New I/O (NIO) APIs—Java's New I/O APIs are significant new additions to J2SE 1.4. We overview regular expressions, buffers, channels, charsets, selectors and non-blocking I/O in sections of three chapters.

  • Unified Modeling Language™ (UML)—We have fully converted all flowcharts and inheritance diagrams to UML. We also carefully tuned the optional (but highly recommended) case study we present on object-oriented design using the UML.

  • Red text is used to point out intentional
errors and problematic areas in programs.
